JOB SUMMARY

Created from the merger of Peninsula Community Foundation and Community Foundation Silicon Valley, Silicon Valley Community Foundation brings together the complementary strengths of each parent foundation to create a greater impact than either could realize alone. The new community foundation is committed to serving as a center for philanthropy providing world-class services to donors and nonprofits and inspiring greater civic participation throughout San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.

Reporting to the chief of staff, the senior director of development is responsible for assisting in the development of the strategy and plan for raising over $300 million annually for the community foundation, in close collaboration with the CEO and president and senior staff. He/she will work with the chief of staff and the management team to analyze, plan, execute, control and evaluate fund raising for the community foundation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The senior director of development is expected to assist in the development of the strategy and implementation plan for seeking out and bringing in new donors to the community foundation. He/she will be responsible for remaining informed on legal, accounting, investment and technology issues, and in providing leadership on complex gift transactions. The senior director will also be responsible for prospecting and acquiring new donors; working with other members of staff to deliver relevant expertise to prospective donors (e.g. finance, investments, planned giving); working closely with the vice president of donor engagement to manage the initial gift transaction and ongoing relationship with donors; and working with the senior director of grants and gift administration to ensure the speedy and accurate acceptance and completion of gift transactions. He/she will also manage the development staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

The position requires a consistent track record in donor identification and development, ideally in a community foundation, hospital or university setting. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years fund-raising experience in community foundations or community-based organizations, and will have successfully led development in a team-oriented, highly collaborative environment. He/she will have a proven track record with a large (100+ employees) multi-site organization where employees are distributed in different locations. The successful candidate will also have an extremely strong knowledge of tax matters and other legal requirements related to fund raising, and demonstrated expertise in complex and large gift transactions including planned gifts, gifts of complex assets (e.g. restricted stock, stock options), and real property. He/she will also have a deep personal network of fund-raising professionals and expert advisors to draw upon.
