History

Silicon Valley Community Foundation serves San Mateo and Santa Clara counties, from Daly City south to Gilroy. The community foundation is focused on solving the most challenging problems, improving the quality of life and inspiring greater civic participation throughout the region. In September 2008, the community foundation announced five key grantmaking strategies: Economic Security, Education, Immigrant Integration, Regional Planning and a Community Opportunity Fund to address time-sensitive community needs.

Today Silicon Valley Community Foundation is a philanthropic leader and financial steward. We are one of the largest community foundations in the world, with more than 1,600 philanthropic funds and $2.9 billion in assets under management. We partner with families, individuals and corporations to manage and facilitate their philanthropy. Our expert staff provides world-class customer service to help donors achieve their giving goals with ease and effectiveness. We connect donors’ interests to the most pressing needs, whether in Silicon Valley or around the globe. Our community knowledge and full range of charitable giving services make us the ideal partner for powerful philanthropy. As this region’s comprehensive center for philanthropy, the community foundation shapes critical public policy issues, partners with nonprofit groups and institutions advancing the best ideas, and directs resources swiftly and strategically toward unforeseen needs.

The community foundation began with a bold new mission to transcend county lines and solve problems more effectively. On July 12, 2006 the boards of Peninsula Community Foundation and Community Foundation Silicon Valley decided to merge into one, united foundation capable of creating positive regional change on a larger scale. Silicon Valley Community Foundation officially launched on January 3, 2007. One of the nation’s leading nonprofit executives, Emmett D. Carson, Ph. D. was appointed CEO of the new community foundation.
