SUPPORTING ORGANIZATION

If your philanthropic goals are more complex, you can create a supporting organization.

Your donations still receive the maximum level of tax deductions (as with a donor advised fund), but the supporting organization has its own board, investment policies, and charitable status. The community foundation manages the investments and administers the start-up costs, grants and reporting of the supporting organization.

A supporting organization is a separate charitable organization, a 509(a)(3), affiliated with the foundation and is therefore conferred public charity status.

The supporting organization’s grants and activities must fulfill and support the charitable purposes of the Foundation (the “supported organization”).

Silicon Valley Community Foundation only works with Type I supporting organizations. Type I supporting organizations are directly controlled by their "supported organization." The majority of the board of the supporting organization is appointed by the community foundation, and the majority of the board must be non-disqualified persons, under applicable laws and regulations, with respect to the supporting organization.

You may open a supporting organization with a gift of $10 million.
