SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS:
There is still time to apply for the following 2008 scholarships:
Silicon Valley Community Foundation administers a variety of scholarship programs. The majority are designated for current or former residents of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
Silicon Valley Community Foundation provides community foundation managed scholarship funds for individual donors who want the community foundation staff to administer the application and selection process. The community foundation appoints a volunteer selection committee and conducts the scholarship selection and award process.
Scholarships administered by the community foundation cover a wide range of eligibility criteria such as outstanding grades, community involvement, academic potential and specific school. Deadlines are generally in the first week of March. In 2007, we awarded over $328,000 to 137 students!
The community foundation also works with private donors who want to be directly involved in the application and selection process. For these donors, Silicon Valley Community Foundation provides donor involved scholarship funds. The donor oversees an external selection committee and the scholarship selection process, as approved by the community foundation.
All scholarships have been established by generous local individuals, corporations or organizations to assist students with their educational pursuits. Whether honoring loved ones or providing for a specific community, each scholarship expresses a deep belief in the power of education to help young people achieve their dreams.

Leo and Trinidad Sanchez Scholarship
Scholarship Amount: Up to $4,500
Number of Awards: One
History
This scholarship was established by Gil Sanchez in memory and honor of his parents, Leo and Trinni Sanchez, who immigrated from Mexico to the United States in the 1910s. They found work throughout Central California picking crops until World War II when they both found employment in Richmond, building "Liberty" cargoships for the war effort. Leo eventually became a body and fender worker in San José, California, where he and his wife raised five children. Because of moving around for work, Leo did not have the opportunity to finish high school, but he passed on to his children a strong work ethic and respect for education. The estate he and Trini left behind, allowed his son, Gil, to establish a scholarship to memorialize their dedication to hard work and family, and their desire to be good citizens. Gil's hope is that it will encourage and help further the education of young people seeking to become architects.
