Environmental Solutions Forum II
connects kids in Redwood City with the outdoors
Youth from low income families and families of color lack access to the outdoors. They are less likely to access or to learn about the environment in comparison to youth from middle-income or wealthy families. Yet these children are more likely to live in communities that are polluted and to suffer from health problems related to lack of exercise and healthy outdoor activities. In fall 2006, the Center for Venture Philanthropy launched Environmental Solutions Forum II, a three-year social venture fund that integrates and coordinates in-school with out-of-school learning centered around the San Francisco Bay ecosystem. Principals and teachers from three Redwood City schools, plus, nonprofits and youth development agencies are working together to develop an exemplar model for environmental learning, exploring the outdoors and developing youth skills.
