VENTURE VAN

Creating Art to Build Strong Communities

Some say art is a mirror, reflecting a society’s sensibilities, fears, challenges and wonders. Others believe that art is a hammer that the artist wields to mold and influence society. One characteristic of art is indisputable however: its unique ability to express and shape a community’s soul.

During this tour, we will visit two exemplary models of how art is helping unify communities and bring about change. First, in San José’s Mayfair neighborhood, the Mayfair Improvement Initiative and Teatro Visión collaborate to create theater that encourages people to identify problems and work together toward resolutions.

The second stop on our tour is inspired by traditional Japanese drumming, the drum-and-dance art form of San José Taiko. In one of the nation’s three remaining Japan-towns, San José Taiko musicians preserve cultural traditions and aid historic preservation efforts.

Join us and experience the rich transformational power of the arts.

Tuesday, April 24, 8:30 – 11 a.m.
