VICE PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPMENT

JOB SUMMARY

Created from the merger of Peninsula Community Foundation and Community Foundation Silicon Valley, Silicon Valley Community Foundation brings together the complementary strengths of each parent foundation to create a greater impact than either could realize alone. As a result, Silicon Valley Community Foundation emerges as a center for philanthropy providing world-class services to donors and nonprofits and inspiring greater civic participation throughout San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.

Reporting to the chief of staff, chief development and communications, this individual is responsible for developing the strategy that seeks out and brings in new donors to the community foundation to raise over $300M annually. Working closely with the chief of development and communications and the management team, this individual is responsible for managing all activities related to analysis, planning, execution, control and evaluation of fundraising for Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

Hiring range: $125,000 - $150,000 per year

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with the chief of development and communications to develop the strategy and plan for raising over $300M annually for the community foundation. Oversee the implementation and execution of the strategic fundraising plan.
  • Remain informed on legal, accounting, investment and technology issues as they affect current and prospective donors; advise staff as necessary.
  • Provide leadership expertise of complex gift transactions.
  • Prospect and acquire new donors.
  • As appropriate, work with the board to identify potential donors.
  • Lead, manage and develop the development staff of approximately five people.
  • Help coordinate fundraising across the community foundation.
  • Work closely with the vice president of donor engagement to manage the transition and relationship with donors.
  • Work closely with the senior director of grants and gifts administration to ensure the speedy and accurate acceptance and completion of gift transactions.
  • Develop and maintain the infrastructure and process for the development function.
  • Attend and participate in appropriate conferences, events, networks to establish significant positioning in the community and as a representative of the community foundation.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Sociology, Anthropology, Business or related discipline.
  • J.D. or professional advisor experience is a plus.
  • 10+ years demonstrated experience in technical and complex fundraising and gift planning for community based organizations and/or community foundations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in complex and large gift transactions including planned gifts, gifts of complex assets and real property.
  • Strong knowledge of tax matters and other legal requirements related to fundraising. Demonstrated effort to maintain and improve knowledge in these areas.
  • Prefer management experience with a large (100+ employees) or multi-site organization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Previous demonstrated experience with leading and managing a development function in a public benefit organization.
  • Excellent people and project management skills, with an ability to work in diverse groups.
  • Ability to approach situations and challenges with a sense of humor.
