Give2Asia was established in 2001 by The Asia Foundation to facilitate and encourage charitable giving in Asia. Through its relationship with The Asia Foundation, Give2Asia gives donors access to a comprehensive network across Asia built over 50 years and leverages over 200 staff in 18 offices. Give2Asia’s own staff are also present in areas where giving is most active, including China. Their ability to partner with local charitable groups and provide technical assistance enables them to be on the ground in response to long-term community development and immediate disaster relief needs.

Give2Asia’s local partners have collected basic staples, footwear and medical supplies for distribution to cyclone survivors and have treated 700 patients during the first few days after the disaster. They are providing shelter to 1,300 families in South Dagon and supporting mini projects to bring clean water, emergency shelter and water pumps in the Irrawaddy delta.

UNICEF is delivering oral rehydration solution, water guards, first aid kits and tarpaulins to the Irrawady delta area and townships in Yangon. UNICEF is also focusing on ensuring safe water supplies and building latrines for the affected population, including displaced persons in camps.

UNICEF is also focusing on returning children to schools by June 1, in an effort to bring a sense of normalcy to their lives and protect them from potential abuse as a result of displacement. UNICEF plans to support the identification of separated children, family tracing, verification and reunification of children with families, and the establishment of safe environments for children and women.

World Vision teams have worked in Myanmar for 40 years assisting children and families across the country through food assistance, agriculture, health, clean water, education, income generation, anti-trafficking and nutritional assistance programs.

World Vision has delivered 35 metric tons of rice, 18,000 liters of drinking water and diesel fuel to allow generator pumps to continue to pump water. They have also distributed clothing, blankets and tarpaulins to people living in and around Yangon.

Teams are coordinating with authorities to explore an airlift of zinc sheets, tents, tarpaulins and medicine into the country from its global pre-positioning warehouses. Assessment teams have been deployed to five areas in the hardest-hit delta area to determine urgent needs, including Bogalay, where some 10,000 are thought to be dead.

With the help of its founder The Asia Foundation, Give2Asia is identifying local partners who can help deliver assistance to those affected by the quake. China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs, the government agency responsible for disaster relief, is working with other government agencies, NGOs and charity organizations to provide victims with immediate relief. Give2Asia expects that its greatest impact will come after the first wave of emergency relief as communities will need to restore basic services, such as local health care and education, as well as rebuild homes and schools.

Please note that by May 16, Give2Asia’s Beijing office will have details on its first set of projects requiring immediate funding. More details are available on their website.
