SVCF donor Reed Hastings, founder of Netflix: Supporting schools is a lifetime cause

For Netflix founder Reed Hastings, giving to education is a lifetime passion. The Silicon Valley entrepreneur started Pure Software in 1991 at the age of 30, then moved on to found Netflix in 1997. Through Hastings' vision and business savvy, Los Gatos-based Netflix has become a model of innovation and one of the world's most valuable brands.

But Hastings has never forgotten his roots.

"My first job out of college was as a high school math teacher," he recalls. "Later I switched into computers and building businesses - being an entrepreneur - but I've always kept my affection for the classroom, and for kids."

To expand educational opportunity, Hastings created a $100 million philanthropic fund, called The Hastings Fund, which is administered by SVCF.

"What's great about Silicon Valley Community Foundation is they make it so easy to be a donor," he said. "And they provide as much advice as you want both on structure and on particular donations."
