On Thursday, November 7, 2019, a fire broke out at an 11-unit apartment complex in north Sunnyvale. The damage was such that the entire complex was red-tagged as uninhabitable, leaving 53 residents, including 20 children, without homes. According to Sunnyvale Community Services, many of these low-income families had doubled and tripled-up in the small one-bedroom and studio apartments. The Red Cross immediately helped families during the first few days after the fire. Over the Veterans Day weekend, the City of Sunnyvale and Sunnyvale Community Services (SCS) worked together to connect with clients and assess their needs. SCS has taken over case management of the families and seeks help from the community. They need to raise $300,000 to cover hotel and rental costs -- including deposit and first month's rent -- as they work to help each family secure new housing.
SVCF is pleased to support this campaign with a $25,000 grant. We hope you will join us and donate to help Sunnyvale Community Services in supporting the families who were displaced by this fire.
