Silicon Valley Community Foundation to Commemorate 10th Anniversary with Special $1 Million Grantmaking Initiative

First request for proposals to open Dec. 19

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — As part of the commemoration of Silicon Valley Community Foundation’s 10-year anniversary in 2017, the community foundation has announced a special $1 million grantmaking initiative. Through this special initiative, 10 grants of up to $100,000 each will be awarded to deserving organizations doing the most innovative and effective work to make the Silicon Valley region a better place.

“Since we began making our first grants in late 2008, SVCF has awarded more than $90 million to over 500 local nonprofit organizations through our discretionary grantmaking program,” said Erica Wood, chief community impact officer at SVCF. “In marking our anniversary by distributing an additional $1 million in grants, we hope to recognize some new and innovative ideas for approaching the issues we’ve been committed to for the past 10 years.”

Two grants will be awarded to projects within each of SVCF’s existing four strategic grantmaking areas: economic security, education, immigration and building strong communities.

  • Economic Security – Growing opportunities to save, invest and protect family wealth
  • Building Strong Communities – Involving residents in the design of their communities
  • Immigration – Recognizing immigrants as assets in our region
  • Education – Preparing middle school students to succeed in college and career

Two additional grants will also be awarded to projects aimed at increasing civic engagement and participation through creative and innovative uses of technology.

The first Request for Proposals (RFP), which will focus on the issue of fostering economic security for low- and moderate-income people in Silicon Valley, will open on Dec. 19, 2016. SVCF will announce the two recipients of this initial anniversary grant round in February 2017. To read and respond to the RFP, please visit

Timelines for subsequent RFPs in this 10th anniversary grantmaking initiative will be listed on SVCF’s website here: By using an RFP approach, SVCF aims to solicit the best thinking of nonprofit service providers, public sector agencies, research institutions and other entities service San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
