Dr. Emmett Carson, CEO and president of Silicon Valley Community Foundation delivered the keynote address at the recent event recognizing Synopsys employee volunteers named, "Faces of Giving." The annual gathering provides Synopsys employees an opportunity to hear from thought leaders in the community, showcase successes and celebrate volunteer contributions.
"Our employees’ leadership through community involvement makes an impactful difference for those organizations and lives they touch," comments Theo Olson, Community Relations Manager. "We appreciate the support from the community foundation in recognizing our employees who are philanthropic in their personal lives and share their skills, time and energy."
A valued corporate partner, Synopsys is among the 40+ corporate advised funds managed by the community foundation’s business services department. In addition to its grantmaking Synopsys empowers the creativity and energy of its dynamic employee base through the Synopsys Shares program. In 2008, 45 Synopsys offices around the world volunteered with 52 nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations, engaging 2,815 employees in the program.
In his speech, Dr. Carson congratulated Synopsys employees, "I want to extend my congratulations to all of you because I’m in a room with people who understand the importance of community."
He explained the role of the community foundation in bringing people together to solve major social and economic challenges facing our region. He identified disparities in the delivery of quality of education in Silicon Valley and described the impact the economic downturn has had on unemployment, rate of foreclosures, and the ability of our social service agencies to meet the increased demand for food and shelter.
Dr. Carson stated that we are all in this together and that there is no single answer to solving the problems facing our community. He concluded to the audience, "We believe in working with families, individuals and corporations - we can get enough smart people around the table brainstorming to move closer to solutions. We appreciate and honor our partnership with Synopsys and all of the work that you do; and I hope that I’ve encouraged you to be evangelists for whatever your causes are to your friends, to your co-workers, to your family members. We need it now more than ever."
